What Does Brake Fluid Do?
One of the most impressive feats your car accomplishes is being able to stop at high speeds. For the push of a pedal to stop thousands of pounds moving at high speed, pressure needs to transfer from the pedal to the brakes. Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid that's responsible for making sure the pressure you apply to your brake pedal translates to the actual pressure applied by your brake pads.
Just like all the fluids in your vehicle, your brake fluid tends to degrade in quality with time. Whether it gets dirty, there's a leak, or you're simply losing pressure, it's important to have your brake fluid changed regularly. Most manufacturers recommend changing your brake fluid every four to five years. However, it's a good idea to have brake inspections done in between to make sure you don't have a leak or some other brake fluid problem.
